1 Element in 4 Styles
A Bay Window Miniseries
Watercolor and Gouache / 2023
“Paint something characteristic of your focus and representative of your style.” Simple enough.
“Now reimagine that element as if it had been captured by three other artists.” Easier said than done.
When Mary was challenged by a class to paint one element in four styles, she selected a bay window due to her ongoing interest in architectural details. After painting this in her own style, it was time to consider how it might look if rendered by other artists. She chose Berthe Morisot, Edward Hopper, and Alex Katz, paying attention to their brushwork and considering, in the cases of Morisot and Hopper, the specific approaches they took to working in water-based media.
Her inclusion of the air conditioning unit depended on her perception of whether it would have been included by any of the artists she selected. It seemed out of place (and too anachronistic) to put it in the Morisot-inspired piece, and she felt as though Katz would have simplified his planes to an extent that excluded a component like this.
