Reflections for Change Submission

Reflections for Change began as a project in which artists created work on mirrors to express their feelings regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

When Mary was invited to participate by the project’s founder, Italian artist Elena Morizio, she was so honored and so grateful for the opportunity to represent South Dakota though the creation of a piece (seen left), and she wrote the following to accompany her image:

"South Dakota's failure to recognize the COVID-19 pandemic as a public health emergency has led to the heavy politicization of wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. As a result, those of us who do wear masks in an effort to keep ourselves, our families, and others safe feel as though we are entering a battle for our health and safety each time we leave our homes. When I am at the grocery store and walk past shoppers proving political points by refusing to wear their masks, I visualize the air filling with COVID-19 cells. In my submission to Reflections for Change, I am battling the weapon of my enemies armed with nothing but my mask."
